Joey Mazzaferro is a Public Relations Specialist II for the College of Design, Construction and Planning at the University of Florida. He is also the president-elect of the Gainesville chapter.
I had been at my previous job for 11 years and needed a new challenge. I really wanted to get back to working at my alma mater, the University of Florida, and had been trying for months with no success.
I applied for the Public Relations Specialist position at UF’s College of Design, Construction and Planning and received an email for a job interview. Once I realized that Julie Frey, APR, CPRC, was the one emailing me, I knew I had a very good chance at being hired for the position.
Julie knew my work as a volunteer through FPRA and that gave me a leg up on the other competitors. Obviously, she chose me because of my qualifications. However, I am sure my FPRA membership didn’t hurt my cause.
My current co-workers kid with me that once they heard I was an FPRA member, they knew I was going to be hired. They said lucky for them, they like me.
In all seriousness, my FPRA membership was invaluable in helping me get my current position. Julie knew my work ethic from my work in our organization and I am forever grateful to be working where I am now.
