The 1970s

1970
James Turner served as the Association’s president.
January 19
The Dick Pope/Polk County Chapter was formed.

September 9
The Palm Beach and Gold Coast (Ft. Lauderdale) chapters were formed.
1971
Doris Wilkes, director of the Florida Hospitality Education Program, became FPRA's first female president; an early indicator of the enormous influence women would have on the profession.
January 25
The Florida Keys-Conch Chapter was formed.
1972
Vernon E. Bradford became president and Bob Dahne was named FPRA’s first Executive Director. The Association’s Annual Convention was held at the Playboy Plaza in Miami with its theme of “The Professional.”

1973

L. John Wachtel became president and a three-dimensional Golden Image Award trophy was created.


1974

A. Royce Godshall became president and an accreditation program, Accredited Public Relations Professional (APRP), was introduced with 17 members earning accreditation. The Certified Public Relations Counselor (CPRC) program was also introduced.

March 1
The Surf (Volusia County) Chapter in Daytona Beach was formed.
1975
Robert G. Jones became president and Gov. Reuben Askew proclaimed “PR Week,” thanks to FPRA member Bea Quigg.

1976

Bea Quigg served as the Association’s president and the first CPRC designation was awarded to Jean Ludlow of Jacksonville.

1977

Roy C. Anderson, APRP, served as the Association’s president.

1978

William D. Hunter, APRP, served as the Association’s president.

1979

J. Donald Turk, APRP, served as the Association’s president. 218 entries, in 34 categories, were submitted for the Golden Image Awards competition.
